SIMON FREND
SCULPTOR-MAKER-SYTEMS DESIGNER
01 about
I work in the gaps between worlds: art, craft and design; analogue and digital; education and industry; life and end of life. My job, wherever I land, is to understand the whole system and turn messy problems into clear, conceptual solutions and objects that actually feel right to the people using them.
I’m a metals-trained designer–maker and educator with a background that runs from coded welding and safety-critical fabrication, through 20+ years as a Senior Lecturer in 3D Art, Craft & Design, to current work in product, audio and sculptural design. I’m most useful at the interfaces – translating and synthesising between makers, engineers, clients, students and users that concepts are cleanly integrated and implemented.
As founder of dyingarts.co.uk, I explore how objects sit between the living and the dead: ethical cremation urns and funerary pieces that are handmade, materially honest and environmentally considerate. The work sits between sculpture, product design and ritual object, using biodegradable and dissolvable materials so pieces can return to the environment as cleanly as possible while fulfilling the need for ceremony and emotional meaning.
In parallel I’m developing a hi-fi architecture that bridges passive loudspeakers and active/DSP systems through a planned upgrade pathway. It’s aimed at giving manufacturers a new product story and a long-lived customer journey, without forcing customers into closed ecosystems. My work spans system architecture, mechanical design, documentation, and route-to-market planning.
Across these projects I move between studio, workshop, lab and meeting room: designing and making objects, writing and auditing curricula, handling H&S and QA, and building frameworks that other people can actually use without needing a translator.
Specialisms: product & industrial design · audio hardware & system architecture · sculpture & metals · curriculum and programme design · risk, H&S and QA frameworks · sustainable and circular design · retrofit and modular ecosystems.
Open to visiting and sessional teaching, sculpture and product commissions, collaborative exhibition/gallery projects, conversations and collaborations of all kinds.
